Reba Puts Foot in Mouth at ACM Awards With Dixie Chicks Insult

Using her pedestal as the host of last night’s Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, Reba McEntire fired a low blow at the Dixie Chicks:
“I don't know why I was so nervous about hosting this show this year. If the Dixie Chicks can sing with their foot in their mouths, surely I can host this sucker."
According to Reuters, this joke drew the loudest applause of the night. What Reuters leaves out is that if this awards show is like any other awards show, the audience was filled mostly with country music insiders, not fans. The Chicks have been enemies of the country music establishment since well before ”the [Bush] Incident“. As such, it's no surprise that Reba got a positive reaction from the in-house crowd. I don’t think the watching-at-home crowd as a whole reacted similarly. I guess we’ll find out when the record sales figures are released.

But let’s take a step back for a moment: Reba, I hope your joke was meant entirely in good humor. However, it if it wasn’t, I have a question for you: Does the following situation sound familiar?
A very popular country music singer uses her time on stage to insult a common enemy of a friendly audience without the enemy represented in the audience (the Dixie Chicks were not at the ACM awards).
Hmm.... Where have I seen this type of situation before? Oh, yes! It’s why you and your country music industry old boys claim you are mad at the Dixie Chicks in the first place! (One of the only plausible reasons cited by the anti-Chicks brigade for why the Chicks were singled out for their statements - whereas, say, Tim McGraw can say similar things without any repercussions - is that the Chicks ”cowardly“ did so on foreign soil.)

Let’s examine this blatant hypocrisy in chart form:

It's the same damn thing! This just makes my blood boil. Reba, by your anti-Chick brigade’s own logic, you are a coward (not to mention a hypocrite). I swear, the more I cover the Dixie Chicks, the more I understand their pessimism about the country music industry.

However, despite my anger, Reba, I promise you the following:
  1. I will not ruin your career by boycotting your records (or your clothing line).
  2. I will not send you death threats (in fact, I really like you most the time).
  3. I will not embarrass you in front of all of your colleagues when you are not present.
Before I close, I’d like to make a brief point in Reba’s defense. Prior to her Chicks comment, she made the following, much saner joke:
"Sugarland is the nominee for the album ‘Twice the Speed of Life’, which we can assume is not about FEMA."

I think you might have been the only one watching. Can you imagine what the ratings could have been if the Chicks had performed? Through the roof.

Great analysis!! Reba should have minded her manners!! EH

I watched the show and was enjoying it until Reba's comments. I would have loved to see the Dixie Chicks perform. I enjoy some of Toby Keith's music but would never buy it because of how he disrespected the Dixie Chicks. I don't really like Reba's music, but for sure now I would never buy it. I will in protest to these artists and in support of the Chicks buy their album. If we stand for free speech, then I expect everyone to have the freedom to speak their mind. I am not from Texas, but I am embarrassed by Bush.

I have heard it said on certain news cannels that the Chicks comment is (somehow?) worse as it happened while the USA is at war, and that it helps the enemy. Frankly, if Fundamentalist Muslims care what a cute blonde female singer from Texas has to say, then we have won the war already. The USA has the right to free speech entrenched in its consitution and surely it is more un-American to try to censor a critic of the President than to voice that criticism.

The Dixie Chicks said that they'd rather not have fans that "have us in their 5-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith." Why is it bad for her to snap back when she was snapped at first?

Freedom of speech also covers those that criticize others comments.

I hate to state the obvious, but The Dixie Chicks did make an ugly remark about Reba first. I do not think it is in Reba's character to just criticize for no apparent reason. Their are more comments made about how nice and humble she is by conservative and liberal entertainers. I think hateful things have been said by both and they should just apologize like adults.

I'd pay $20.00 for a CD now that contained a duet between Natalie Maines and Reba. It would be funny if they recorded a song that poked fun at this whole silly controversy. I mean if I went crazy everytime someone made a comment about my queer ass, shit I'd always have laryngitis. Come on people, who doesn't like a good ole' feud between megastars. It does my heart good to see some drama finally in Country Music. It just shows that it is now a popular genre, because we actually care about this ridiculous shit. I do love Reba, but she needs to focus on the thousands of projects she is involved with and just ignore the comments made. That goes for The Dixie Chicks too. Hell, I think they are cool as hell, even though they did diss my girl first.

Reba had every right to say what she did! The dixie chicks are the ones who have created so many stereotypes about country music and it is high time evey one knows that harldly anyone shares their sentiments. I personally used to like the dixie chicks, before I realized that they were not above insulting the leader of their country. Whether or not you agree with him and his pollicies should not dictate how you represent him to other nations. You helped elect him so stop whinning! Besides that, all of their music videos make them look like they are on something! Have you noticed that? They could be poster children for a drug free america. Here are a few ideas: Their picture with the caption "the biggest reason not to do drugs" or "crack kills, just not quickly enough" Good ridance I can't stand them! Reba, thank you for saying what everyone was thinking!

GOSH i am so sick of hearing about these stupid dixie HICKS. they deserved every bit of what reba said and what she said was hilarious. they started crap with the president and other country singers and expected not to get anything back. hello, STUPID! reba has wayyy more talent than they do and has gotten them to where they are today. if anything they should be thanking her than running their big mouth. that stupid blonde one, the main one, natalie, seriously needs to shut her pie hole. they say their ashamed our president is from texas, well i'm ashamed their from texas. i'm ashamed they were even in the country music business at ALL. at least reba has some talent. she will always be #1 in country music. so screw off, you stupid dixie hicks.

  • At 10:38 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

well....i guess record sales blowed your theory all up.the dixie chicks can't even keep their tour going.
Reba and colleges aren't the only ones thinking these 3 gals need to find something else to do with their careers...things would have been fine for them if they had just kept their mouths shut! or should I say Natalie kept her mouth shut! Sounds like the two sisters need to wrangle that girl up and keep duck tape handy when out in public. They have her fat mouth to thank for a downward fall to the bottom in the no career world.

  • At 2:23 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I think Reba had a right to say what she said she did not mean anything by it. Reba is a good person who sings her heart out for country music and if you are a real country music fan you would not talk so bad about Reba. Reab has done nothing but good for country music granted she did not have to add fuel to the fire but Reba McEtire is a real down home country music singer.

  • At 9:50 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    Disgusting, Reba should be ashamed...

a lot of people doing crazy things, but I still love Reba.

    What is this?

I see Rock Blues guitar player,GW Williams name is everywhere.
Really? It's everywhere, whats up with that?

His name is in press releases,on blogs, forums,on radio and in the news.
He's selling on and itunes and on Sony records I think.
My question is where did this guitar freak come from?

What makes him one of the greatest top 10 guitar players ever, since he's only been selling music for 8 months about?
What about Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan?
Instead all I hear about is GW Williams.
I must admit he has several songs that could top the charts, like - Beyond The Clouds and Electric Son Rise and I guess his gospel song, On Easter Morning ,gots the hots in the church world also.
But I rather hear about the old guitar stars.

It's just I think to be a guitar superstar you need to be around a few years first.
Understand I am not trying to knock the guy, but Gezzzzzz, he's all over the Internet and everywhere I look these days?

    Thanks Sally Frenchbrae

I am so fed up with entertainers who think their narrow sheltered view of the world revolves around them.. It is about time the RIGHT FIGHTS BACK!. I am paying hard earned money to be entertained. I don't care what SEAN Pencilhead or Snoozen Serandon, Smart Alex Balwin, Heart, Glen FRIED BRAIN, UGLY Mad dona , Matty DEMON, Mathew Brodick has to say... I don't go to a customer's house and spew my Political Garbage, I would get Fired.. So HOLLYWIERD, SHUT UP!!They have the right to say it sure... But I CAN FIRE THEM and NOT Pay to see them, their movies or music. The LEFT CAN GO CRAWL BACK INTO THEIR HATE AMERICA HOLE!!! We need a Website that exposes the Who is Who in Hollywierd and their Party Affiliations... Then we can NOT SEE THEM, NOR HEAR THEM... If they hate the Right so much, let us now so we don't support your DECADENT LIFESTYLES!!!

Great post but sadly the talented Reba is not very well educated and not very intelligent. She would have been down at House of Un-American Activities, naming names to Senator McCarthy and his Nazis and burying people in the 1950's not out of meanness but out of dopey blind patriotism. I still like "Fancy" though, great tune.

You said let's see when the record numbers come out......It's 2010 and Reba's sold another 4,000,000!! Guess what she had the biggest debut album just a year after your comment in fact that album sold over 300,500 in its first week. To top that off she just had the biggest hit of her career with Consider Me Gone....4 weeks at number one.....1,000,000 copies sold on itunes and she is about to release her highly anticipated new album ALL THE WOMAN I AM!! Oh, and by the way the chicks said some pretty nasty things to her just three monthes before you can read about it on her WIKI page...why do you progressives always have to act like there is a conspiracy....

you people don't know real music. Reba had every right to say what she said. And frankly I do NOT like the dixie chicks. They were direspectful to Reba. If it weren't for her people probably wouldn't know who they are. As a matter of fact they wouldn't be where they are today if it weren't for Reba.

Well you got a fact wrong. Country award shows, or most award shows, the majority of the people are fans. The high levels are all fans. So they contributed to the support of Reba's remark. I'll just stick to what Reba has said. "Respect my elders". Did the Dixie Chicks do that to the President of our country or a well respected entertainer? No. Reba has been around long enough that most people can agree how understanding, sweet and forgiving she is. I honestly believe she was just poking fun at the drama. Also, the Bushes are her friends. Everyone will get a little offended when someone says something offensive or mean about your friends. By the way I love your blog name! I, too, am a liberal country fan! A HUGE one! Both ways! :)

...ect...and on itunes UK and USA worlds top 100 list of all time at number 82? for his song Electric Rock Guitarist

and now he's crapping down our throats again with a world hit song California Rock N Blues & Acoustic Guitar Blues ? is he the best guitarist in rock and blues music in this jerk of a world we live in today ? or is he really top pick like the music critics say?

I admit he's a great guitarist and could be a top 25 pick but not number 2 on the all time list like posted this a joke or is he really that good?
please !!!! give me a break this is nutz man !! HENDRIX RULES BABY !!

They freaking started it. They insulted Reba's fans and she has said she doesn't care if someone insults her but when its her family, friends, and fans she can't stand it. The fact that's all she said about them is something to applaud.

For everyone bashing Reba on here, I think everyone is forgetting what the dixie chicks said about Reba PRIOR to this event. There was an article that quoted Martie McGuire saying she would rather have a smaller following of really cool people who get their music, rather than a larger following of fans who have Reba and Toby Keith in their 5-disc changers. Now, I could understand them bringing Toby Keith into it, because that is who the feud was between (and about Bush). But there was absolutely no reason for Martie to put Reba's name in there.......Reba did nothing wrong. Not to mention, Reba was defending country music fans. And let us not forget when Jason Aldean & Kelly Clarkson performed @ the 2012 Grammy Awards. Jason Aldean's mic kept cutting out, and she had all those things to say about him......."I don’t know him. I just know this wasn’t a good night for him. It happens,” she responded when a fan called her out.
“I got nothing against the guy, but really? You thought that was in tune?” Maines asked. She clarified her point for another fan, tweeting, “I get the feeling you don’t like that I don’t like top 40 country music. Music’s subjective. Yeah, wasn't his greatest performance, but it's not like they have had perfect performances all the time, either. Natalie also felt the need to say this....."I
haven’t been aware of country music in at least 6 years. It’s not my thing,” she tweeted in response to one shocked fan. A look at who she follows on the social media site backs up that statement. It’s mostly actors, comedians and friends. “I used to follow it because I felt it was my job to know what was going on. I don’t think that anymore;),” she added later. She has a right to free speech, but they chose to turn their backs on country fans, while also insulting a great country artist, and a music legend, who said absolutely nothing to get her going. Reba was protecting country fans when she said, "It's not right to bite the hand that feeds you"......meaning the country fans who had always supported them. Reba didn't say that comment for Bush or Toby Keith.......she said it for her and all the country music fans........which Natalie, Martie & Emily could care less of. Let's remember that before we start showing our ugly faces...........when you get the facts.....GET ALL OF THEM!

The dixie hicks sound like fat cows. Reba was right in what she said.

Hey I was watching the show that night and was appalled by Reba's comments. Award shows are no place for that and 10-years later what a mess we have in Iraq..... As for Reba, I have boycotted her ever since. If her song comes on the radio or her picture on tv - Off it goes.
